Heman “Butch” W. Benson, 77, of Dolgeville, New York passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, January 10, 2024 at Wynn Hospital in Utica, New York after a lengthy battle with health issues. At the time of his passing, he had the comfort and love of his family by his side.
He was born on July 23, 1946 in Little Falls, New York and was the son of the late, Heman and Idella (Seeley) Benson. Butch was educated at Little Falls High School and enlisted in the United States Army in 1964, where he finished his education specializing in diesel mechanics. Butch served his country during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1968 after four years of dedicated service.
On December 16, 1978, Butch was united in marriage to the former, Carolyn Ann Moore at the Dolgeville United Methodist Church Parsonage. The couple shared a loving union of 45 years where they raised their 5 sons in a loving home.
Butch was formerly employed with Helmont Mills in St. Johnsville, MDS in Herkimer and lastly, Pan Am Tannery in Johnstown as a laborer. Due to injuries sustained in a car accident, Butch retired early on in life.
In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing pool, trips to the casino, and dinners and playing cards with close friends. He will be dearly missed by his family.
Butch is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn A. Benson at home; five sons, Steven Benson and his companion, Penny , Gerry Benson, Greg Benson and his wife, Melissa, Phillip Coonradt, and David Coonradt and his wife, Renee all of Dolgeville, NY; seven grandchildren, Steven Benson, Dakota Benson, Courtney Benson, Cole Benson, Alleah Benson, Devin Coonradt and Lindsey Coonradt; nine great-grandchildren; siblings, Janet Klock of Little Falls, Gary Benson of Little Falls, NY, and Wendy Benson Jablonski of Oppenheim, NY; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Beatrice Leavenworth and Janet Leavenworth, both of FL, Bonnie Pawlek and her husband, Robert of Little Falls, NY, Beverly Dager of Dolgeville, NY, Timothy Moore of Dolgeville, NY and Amy Steele of Ilion, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, his in-laws, Harold and Ruth Moore; brothers, Roy Leavenworth and Raymond “Rip” Leavenworth; a sister, Delcia Urich and her husband, Fred “Fritz”; brothers-in-law, Vernon Klock, Harold “Sonny” Moore, Jr. and Ronald Dager.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, January 12, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Miller-Plonka Funeral Home, 30 Wolf Street, Dolgeville, New York. A funeral service will be held immediately following the calling hours at 12 p.m. also at the funeral home with Pastor Rodney Congdon officiating. A burial service with procession will follow to Curtis Corners Cemetery in the Town of Salisbury, New York where the United States Army Honor Guard will accord their funeral honors and he will be laid to rest.
