Frederick H. Pettengill Obituary

Frederick H. Pettengill, 84, of Salisbury, New York, passed away on Thursday evening, December 22, 2022 at Little Falls Hospital in Little Falls, New York. At the time of his passing, he had the love and support of his family by his side.

He was born on December 16, 1938 in Little Falls, New York and was the son of the late, Bayard and Grace (Sweet) Pettengill and the step-son of Helen Pettengill. Fred was educated in the Little Falls School System.

Fred was formerly employed by Remington Arms in Ilion, New York when he retired after 20 years of service. He then went on to work at Dolgeville Central School as head custodian for another 20 years until his retirement in 2001.

Fred was of the Christian faith and attended several churches over the years. He was a proud life member of the Dolgeville Volunteer Fire Department joining in 1971. He served as assistant chief in 1980 and as Chief in 1981. In 1989, Fred transferred his service to the Salisbury Volunteer Fire Department where he served for the last 33 years for a combined 51 years.

In his spare time, Fred enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and his brotherhood and friendships formed within his membership with his fire departments. He was a father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to all. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his children, Brian Pettengill of Salisbury, NY, Dawn Allen and her husband, Kenneth Jr. of Salisbury, NY, Karen St. Louis and her husband Eddie of Deerfield, NY and Valerie Pettengill and her companion, Eric Burchell of the Town of Manheim, NY; grandchildren, Kenneth Allen, III and his wife, Amanda, Keith Jay Crane and his wife, Thalia, Jena Haas and her husband, David, Olivia Allen, Isaiah Walrath, Aydin Walrath, Joel Jakubowicz, Logan Jakubowicz, Evalyn St. Louis and Jack Burchell; great-grandchildren, Josiah Haas, Micah Haas, Lydia Haas, Samuel Haas, Kenneth Allen, IV, Parker Crane and Jack Crane; siblings, Bayard “Jr.” Pettengill and his wife, Liz of Palatine Bridge, NY, and Ethel McKusik of Mohawk, NY; several nieces, nephews; and friend, Janet Johnson and her family.

Fred was predeceased by his parents, a twin brother at birth, his step-mother, Helen Pettengill, his sister, Jean Rice and her husband, Gerald and a brother-in-law, Thurston McKusick. He was also predeceased by his special canine companion, “Scooby” for whom he loved dearly.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Miller-Plonka Funeral Home, 30 Wolf Street, Dolgeville, New York. A funeral service will be held immediately following calling hours at 4 p.m. also at the funeral home with Pastor Robert Brent officiating. The Salisbury Volunteer Fire Department will begin the funeral with their prayer service. A private family interment will take place in the spring of 2023.
