Florence V. (Congdon) Benson

Florence Virginia (Congdon) Benson, 84, passed away on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at Bassett -Cooperstown Hospital.  After a brief illness, she went to be with the Lord with her loving family by her side.  Florence was a lifelong resident of Little Falls, NY.  She was born on August 21, 1939, and was the daughter of the late, Herman and Golda (Harlow) Congdon. Florence was born and raised on the family farm on Paradise Road and educated in Little Falls, NY.

Florence was united to her loving spouse, Heman Benson in 1960 and shared a loving and devoted union of 33 years together until his passing on October 16, 1993.

In her earlier years, Florence worked in various occupations including housekeeping, P&K Dress Factory, and Jaro Footwear Company in Little Falls. After becoming a mother, she then became a caring homemaker to her family and raised her three children in a nurturing and loving home. Florence’s faith and family were put first above all else in her life. She also was trusted to care for nieces and nephews in her home throughout the years while raising her own family.  Later she worked for Catholic Charities.

Florence had a deep faith in her Savior Jesus Christ.  She was a dedicated member of the First Assembly of God Church in Little Falls, New York where she served as a board member.  She practiced her faith in reading the scriptures and enjoyed singing church hymns.

In her spare time, Florence enjoyed working in her flower gardens. Attracting hummingbirds to her flowers gave her much enjoyment and she had an extensive hummingbird collection. She and her husband enjoyed traveling to Canada, fishing with their children, and creating arts and crafts. They especially liked gardening, picking berries and canning.  Yearly, she enjoyed having her annual garage sale where she loved conversing with all who stopped by.  Strangers became friends and they often left with little tokens of her generosity.  Her most precious time was spent in the company of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who she adored.

Florence is survived by her loving children, Gary Benson of Little Falls, NY, Robert Congdon and his wife, Priscilla of Little Falls, NY and Wendy Jablonski of St. Johnsville, NY; her grandchildren, Stephen Jablonski of St. Johnsville, NY, Jennifer Jablonski and her companion, Lonzo Passage of St. Johnsville, NY; Brandon Congdon of Frankfort, NY, and Joshua Congdon and his companion, Stacey Barnes of Herkimer, NY; cherished great-grandchildren, Jackson Congdon, Addison Congdon, and Elliana Congdon; Sisters and brothers-in-law, Janet Travis of Dolgeville, NY, Joann Keeler of Dolgeville, NY, Geraldine Goldstein of Herkimer, NY, Laura Buhaj and her husband, Mike of Little Falls, NY; sisters-in-law, Pat Congdon of Mohawk, NY and Lillian Critch of Ontario Canada; brother-in-law, Buster Klock of East Herkimer, NY: many cherished niece, nephews and cousins.

She is predeceased by a beloved grandson, Robert Congdon, Jr.; brothers, Herman Congdon, David Congdon and his wife, Alyce; sisters, Grace Wells and her husband, Arnold, Catherine Klock, Pearl Brownell, Freda Eaker and her husband, Robert; brothers-in-law, Gerald Goldstein, and Wayne Keeler; and a sister-in-law, Vida Benson.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, April 29, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the locally owned and family operated, Miller-Plonka Funeral Home, 30 Wolf Street, Dolgeville, New York. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday morning, April 30, 2024, at 11 a.m. also at the funeral home with Pastor Timothy Parisi officiating. Procession will follow to Rural Park Cemetery immediately following the funeral home service, where she will be laid to rest with her husband, Heman.
