Edith D. Vedder Obituary

Edith D. Vedder, 94, of Dolgeville, New York passed away peacefully in her sleep on Christmas Eve morning, Saturday, December 24, 2022 at St. Johnsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in St. Johnsville, New York. One month before her passing, Edith lived independently on her own in the comfort of her home.

She was born on December 13, 1928 in Bad Homburg, Germany and was the daughter of Gerhard and Emilie (Ettling) Schmitt. Edith was educated at the Lyceum Girls School and graduated with the Class of 1946. She attended schooling for the U.S. Government and worked as at clerk typist in Oberursel where she met her husband, Ernest J. Vedder.

On October 17, 1948, Edith married Ernest, who was stationed with the United States Army, in Bommersheim, Germany. She moved back to the United States with her husband on December 12, 1948 as a war bride. The couple settled in Dolgeville, New York and raised their two daughters in a loving home. After 32 years together, Ernest passed away unexpectedly on March 29, 1981.

She was a faithful Catholic and was a long-time member of St. Joseph’s Church in Dolgeville, New York.

Edith worked at Eastern Footwear and Daniel Green prior to becoming as a sales clerk & manager at McLaughlin Department Store in Dolgeville, New York. She retired in 1996 after 26 ½ years of employment.

She enjoyed volunteering as an election inspector for the Village of Dolgeville for many years during voting times as well as volunteering at For Pet’s Sake in Ilion, NY, a group that handed out pet supplies to those in need.

Edith loved her crossword puzzles, game shows, crocheting many baby blankets and Afghans throughout the years, Friday morning coffee with friends, Esther Ellis and Angie Masala (dec.), bingo at the DeCarolo Staffo with Betty Hupchick and Angie, lunches with old coworkers, Judy Perkins, Helen Deridder (dec.) and Alanna Fredericks, basket bingo at the Masonic Temple, trips to Grannies for ice cream and shopping at Aldi’s.  

Edith enjoyed spending time with her family and visits from her many friends. She loved taking care of her fur grandbabies, Linda and Mike’s golden retrievers throughout the years, Cocoa (dec.), Maggie (dec.), Ellie Mae and Hannah which provided much comfort to her. Edith was a devoted and loving, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother-in-law and friend. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her affectionate smile and pleasant conversation. Loving memories never die!

Edith is survived by her two loving daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Michael Lyle of Dolgeville, NY and Lori and Todd Jensen of Atlanta, GA; her grandchildren, Ryan Litow of Atlanta, GA and Melissa Litow of Atlanta, GA; a great-grandson, Oliver Litow also of Atlanta, GA; step-grandchildren, Craig Eggleston and his wife, Jessica of Dolgeville, NY, Stephen Jensen of Atlanta Georgia and Bryan Jensen of Atlanta, Georgia; cousins, Felix and Hanna Auerswald of Bad Hamburg, Germany; several nieces and nephews from the Vedder side.

Extended family and friends, including, Tony Masala, who was like an adopted son to Edith, a special thanks to her devoted friends, Alanna and Richard Fredericks who always included her as “family” and we are forever grateful for all of their love and support, as well as the Eggleston Family-especially Brenda Eggleston for invites to all of her holiday dinners and love for Edith, the Lyle Family, Marillynne Koch, Robert and Mark Pritchard, Susan and Vince Prestigiacomo, Edna Weddell (her German friend), Mary Frederico and Bill and Kathy Evans for each played a special part of Edith’s life with their love, friendship and care for Edith.

A memorial mass will be celebrated on Thursday, June 8, 2023 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Dolgeville, New York with Father Brian K. Slezak officiating. A graveside committal service will follow the mass at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Dolgeville, New York, where she will be buried with her husband, Ernest and her mother, Emilie. All are welcome to attend.

The Family of Edith Vedder would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Little Falls Hospital, Third Floor and St. Johnsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their love, compassion, kindness and excellent care for Edith during her final days.
