Alan Gregory Estrada, 75, of Little Falls, New York, and formerly of Pleasant Hill, California, passed away on Sunday afternoon, May 18, 2025 at his home and was pronounced deceased moments later by the compassionate medical staff at Little Falls Hospital in Little Falls, New York.
Mr. Estrada was born on September 19, 1949, in Martinez, California, and was the only son of the late Arthur and Mona (Windsor) Estrada. Alan attended De La Salle and Martinez High School. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, earning his Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Engineering. Before starting his firm, Mr. Estrada interned under the acclaimed architect Allan Johannes of Montclair, CA.
On August 19, 1970, Alan was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in Vietnam. While in the service, Alan was assigned as a field radio repairman, where his knowledge of communication greatly contributed to the war efforts. He earned a National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal when he was honorably discharged on March 20, 1972.
Alan was united in his only marriage to Martha Joyce McMenamin on December 26, 2003, at the historic Cal-Neva resort at Lake Tahoe, Crystal Bay, Nevada. The couple subsequently renewed their vows at Christ the King Catholic church in Pleasant Hill, CA. The couple were utterly devoted to each other during their 21 years of marriage.
Alan was a board-certified architect in California and owned and operated AE Design in Pleasant Hill, California, for 35 years. Mr. Estrada had a major stroke in May 2024 while he and his wife were in the middle of relocating to New York State for what they had hoped would be a long and happy retirement. The couple fell in love with Little Falls, and Alan felt truly blessed to be here.
Alan loved being an architect. He was a devout Catholic throughout his life. He enjoyed repairing and restoring vintage cars in his spare time and was an extraordinarily talented and avid skier. In his younger years, he also regularly attended Grateful Dead shows around the globe and was a devoted fan.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Martha Joyce McMenamin of Little Falls, NY; a daughter, Janelle Estrada of San Diego, CA; a stepson, Deven Edmonds of Brooklyn, NY; two sisters, Martha (Marty) Estrada of Mendocino, CA and Delia (Dee Dee) Estrada of Martinez, CA and many extended family members.
Alan was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Mona Estrada.
In keeping with Alan’s wishes, there will be no public services. The family is being cared for by locally owned and family-operated Miller-Plonka Funeral Home, 30 Wolf Street, Dolgeville, New York.
The family wishes to thank the highly skilled medical professionals from the Upstate NY Veterans Administration at Rome and Syracuse, who helped and supported Alan during the last ten months of his life. The family also thanks extended family, old friends, and new neighbors for their extraordinary kindness.
