Marta C. Ludwig

Marta C. Ludwig, age 102, formerly of Parkside Courts in Dolgeville, New York, passed away peacefully on Saturday morning, October 12, 2019 at Alpine Rehabilitation and Nursing Center after a long and full life.

She was born on April 8, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York and was the daughter of George and Minnie Ludwig.  Marta received her education in Brooklyn schools where she graduated high school.  After graduation, she attended Bryant University in Manhattan, New York. 

Shortly thereafter, Marta enlisted in the United States Navy and served in Hawaii during World War II serving with WAVES, (Woman Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Services, military unit, established on July 30, 1942, as the U.S. Navy’s corps of female members. During World War II some 100,000 WAVES served in a wide variety of capacities, ranging from performing essential clerical duties to serving as instructors for male pilots-in-training. Initially, they did not serve overseas.) She was honorably discharged after serving her country.

Marta then went on to work with the Cunard Steamship Company as a book keeper and office personnel where she worked with the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, mainly.  She worked with the company for over 25 years until her retirement.  She then moved to Dolgeville, New York in 1978.

She was of the Lutheran faith and was a member of the United Lutheran Presbyterian Church in Dolgeville, New York as well as a member of the Oppenheim Senior Citizens.  In her spare time, she enjoyed attending operas, classical music, volunteering at the Kateri Thrift Shop in Dolgeville, visiting and meeting people.  Marta was an avid Yankees fan and attended many games with her family through the years.

She is survived by her beloved niece, Barbara Doerrer and her husband, Frederick of Dolgeville, New York; a nephew, Harold Brossman; two great nephews, Bill Doerrer of Dolgeville, New York and David Doerrer of Houston,Texas; several great nieces and great nephews and great-great nephews; and a special friend and caregiver, Nevada Zimmer of Dolgeville, New York.

In keeping with Marta’s wishes, there are no services.  The family is being cared for by Roberts Funeral Home, 3 East Faville Avenue, Dolgeville, New York 13329 (315-429-3144).
